第一眼看这次的比赛原文时，我也是把原文中的那几个“by”开头的短句按并列进行理解，但发觉如果按并列地位简单按顺序进行翻译，则从译文上看固件是和活塞、转子并列的东西，我认为这是不对的，而我的一贯翻译理念是语法服务于意思的表达，当意思出现问题时或不符合常规时，应检讨对语法的理解是否正确，由此我更倾向于原文中的“by acting on pistons, rotors……”是对“by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine”的进一步补充说明。有朋友认为：形式上四个by是并列关系，但是这四个地方一个比一个递进一层，所以完整地看这四个by是层层递进。我认为这个只对了一半，从活塞、转子到整个发动机这个是递进是没错的，但从固件到活塞、转子不是递进，固件是一个总称，其内涵大于活塞、转子，在这点上不是递进。
另外关于“The defining feature of an internal combustion engine is that useful work is performed by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine”中的“做有用功”在翻译时到底应该放在“运动”前还是后这个问题。在翻译前我查找了内燃机的标准定义，内燃机的标准定义如下：

为了搞清楚这个问题，我从语法角度进行了分析：
首先“that useful work is performed by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine”在整个句子中是一个宾语从句。
“by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine”绝对不是一个方式状语从句，这个可以到网上查找一下，什么样的句子是方式状语从句，方式状语从句一般以as，as if ，though引导。
“useful work is performed by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine” 这个句子主体其实还是一个简单的被动句。“acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine”是 gas的定语从句。
