WHEN scientists gathered at the White House nearly four years ago to announce that they had sequenced the human genome, it was hailed as the “most wondrous map ever produced by humankind”.

Mr Shreeve's book, largely based on personal interviews, is a detailed and immensely entertaining account of this scientific joust.
