By definition, an ambush contains the element of total surprise; which means the victims of the ambush have no knowledge of how it has been constructed, or of what measures may have been employed to prevent escape. Therefore-and this has been proven by the experience of war-the only likely method of survival is withdrawal from the killing zone "the way you came in". All other routes out of the killing zone may be blocked-in a very well-planned and well-executed ambush, even the "back door" would have been closed by the time the ambush is sprung. The established military doctrine in all the forces ofthe world is "immediate, positive, and offensive action. However, the fact is that this is very likely to have been anticipated by the ones who set the ambush, and often plays into their hands. Remember one thing; the odds are heavily, in fact very heavily, against you if you have got trapped in an ambush. Still, there is something that can be done-people have learnt from innumerous ambushes that there are certain steps that, if taken, will increase the chances of your coming out alive. Respect it; this is a lesson that has been learnt at the cost of nothing but sheer blood.
Everyone must therefore be aware of the threat of ambush and must be proficient in counter-ambush drills. The enemy will be less confident of their ability to execute an ambush if they are unable to achieve worthwhile results from such operations, or if they suffer heavy casualties because of our counter action. The enemy ambush can be beaten or at least reduced in the severity of its consequences by immediate positive offensive measures which are thoroughly understood and practiced by all soldiers.
Countermeasures against ambushes can be divided into: precautions taken to avoid or detect an ambush; and action on being ambushed.
