[外文] At the beginning of the century there was no question among modernist thinkers that the time for overthrowing the master′s yoke has come. The notorious corruption of what most assuredly led the young activist, moralist, and physician,Mariano Azuela to join the people′s movement for land and liberty. The revolutionaries who rose up against the Mexican government were not an army but armed people—often only poorly armed—recruited in the spot.In my own family history,on my father′s side,it was the Mexican Revolution that catalyzed my grandmother′s escape to the North(as far north as Chicago)where my father was born twenty years later. My grandmother′s oldest son,Manuel, had been recruited by Pancho Villa′s troops and taken to their quarters in Torreon. He was fourteen years old and my grandmother would have none of it,so along with her other two children she searched for Manuel and, when she found him, took him and the rest of her children as far away from the slaughter of the civil war as she could get.
It was with great faith in the egalitarian ideal that Azuela became politically active in his native state of Jalisco. He was the son of a modest middle-class family and owed no political allegiance to those in power.Azuela began to write at an early age and took his writing seriously, but it was as a doctor that he joined one Pancho Villa′s chieftains,Julian Medina.
