"埋头苦干"
法新社记者紧追不舍地提问说：无论下一个总理是谁，你觉得他应有什么优点？如果下任总理不是你，你觉得他在哪个方面应该向你学习？在哪个方面不应该向你学习？
在委婉地拒绝了有关下任总理人选问题后，朱镕基说："至于我本人，除了我确实是在埋头苦干地干工作以外，我没有什么优点，我不希望别人学习我，特别是某家香港报纸说我的本事就是拍桌子、捶板凳、瞪眼睛，那就更不要学习我。"
他说："但是这个报纸说得不对，拍桌子是拍过桌子，瞪眼睛也瞪过，不能瞪眼睛不就是植物人了嘛，捶板凳绝对没有捶过，那捶起来是很疼的。"
在全场中外记者的大笑中，这位总理严肃地说："至于说我这样做是为了吓唬老百姓，我想没有一个人相信他这种说法，我从来不吓唬老百姓，只吓唬那些贪官污吏。"

When all the Chinese and foreign correspondents were laughing, Premier Zhu continued seriously,”Concerning the saying- I do that for frightening the general public, I think no one will believe it, I only frighten those corrupt officials.”
一位西方记者问周总理：“请问总理先生，现在的中国有没有妓女？”不少人纳闷：怎么提这种问题？大家都关注周总理怎样回答。周总理肯定地说：“有！” 全场哗然，议论纷纷。周总理看出了大家的疑惑，补充说了一句：“中国的妓女在我国台湾省。”顿时掌声雷动。
???? 这位记者的提问是非常阴毒的，他设计了一个圈套给周总理钻。中国解放以后封闭了内地所有的妓院，原来的妓女经过改造都已经成为自食其力的劳动者。这位记者想：问“中国有没有妓女”这个问题，你周恩来一定会说“没有”。一旦你真的这样回答了，就中了他的圈套，他会紧接着说“台湾有妓女”，这个时候你总不能说“台湾不是中国的领土”。这个提问的阴毒就在这里。当然周总理一眼就看穿了他的伎俩，这样回答既识破了分裂中国领土的险恶用心，也反衬出大陆良好的社会风气和台湾的对比。哎呀，周总理考虑问题周密细致，同时又那么快速反应，你不佩服他也难啊！
A correspondent asked,”Is there any prostitutes(Girls who provide illegal sexual services) in China now?”It seemed strange. Why he picked up such a question? People present were eager to know how would Premier zhou react. He answered firmly,”Yes!” While all people were shocked by his words and started to talk secretly, he added,” in Taiwan.” At once, The audience bursted into thunderous applause.
The correspondent addressed this question to Premier Zhu has ill-meaning intentions. He set a trap for the Premier. After the Liberation, China had closed all the bawdyhouses(妓院) on the mainland and all the former prostitutes had turned into laborers. The correspondent supposed to get the answer “There’s no prostitutes in China now.” Once the Preimer answered like this, he could say”Then what about Taiwan?” Of course,our Preimer had realised his intentions, his answer saw through the treacherous plot and disturb the attempt to split the Chinese territory and sovereignty. The precise thinking and the quick reaction of Premier zhu worth our admiration.
