生活的艺术可以概括为：知道何时该坚持，何时该放弃。实际上，生活是一个矛盾体：它迫使我们努力经营自己的全部天赋，同时，又让我们最终舍弃。传统的犹太法学博士会告诉你：“人来到世间是攥着拳头的，而离开时手掌却是摊开的。

   确实，我们必须毫不退让，因为生活一种神奇的东西，它的美照亮了世间的一切。这点我们都知道，但人往往只有回顾过去，而且突然意识到曾经存在的将永远不再存在时，才能认识到这条真理.

   当美丽枯萎时，当爱熄灭时，我们才会将他们想起。然而，最令人感到痛苦的，恰恰是想起自己没能看见那绽放的美丽，忽略了献给自己的爱。 

译文：

The art of life can be summarized as this: You know when to persist, when to give up. In fact, life is a paradox: It forces us to make full use of all our own talents. And it also let us abandon it ultimately. Traditional Rabbis would tell you: "People come into this world with fists clenched, but their palms lay open when they depart.

Indeed, we must make no concession, because life is a mystery, and its beauty has illuminated everything in this world. As we all know about this, but only can people know this truth by retrospecting the past and realizing at a sudden that the things have once existed will be gone for ever.

We will bring love to mind when its flame has burned out, just as we do when  beauty is withered. However, what makes people feel painful most is to think of the efflorescent beauty which is not seen by ourselves but neglecting the love give to us.
