China’sfirst aircraft carrier has entered into service, the defence ministry says.

国防部称，中国首艘航母正式服役

The 300m (990ft) Liaoning - named after the province where itwas refitted - is a refurbished Soviet ship purchased from Ukraine.

“辽宁号”航母长300米，是从乌克兰购进的前苏联战舰改建而来，以改建地—辽宁命名。

For now the carrier has no operational aircraft and will be usedfor training.

目前，航母上还没有实质性战机，主要用于训练。

But China says the vessel, which has undergone extensive seatrials, will increase its capacity to defend state interests.

但是中国表示，航母已经过多次海上测试，将提升中国的国防能力。

China’s Premier Wen Jiabao said the ship would have "amighty and deep significance". It would be "a cause for patrioticpassion", he said at a ceremony attended by top Chinese leaders at DalianPort.

中国总理温家宝大连港口与其他高级官员参加交接仪式时说，这艘航具有重大而深远的意义，它是激发爱国热情的动力。

The delivery of the aircraft carriercomes at a time when Japan and other countries in the region have expressedconcern at China’s growing naval strength.

正当日本与周边其他国家对中国不断增强的海军实力表示担忧之际，中国航母正式服役。

The Liaoning was formally handed over tothe navy at a ceremony in Dalian, state-run Xinhua news agency said.

新华社报道，“辽宁号”航母在大连港举行交接仪式，服役中国海军。

"Having the aircraft carrier enterthe ranks will be of important significance in raising the overall fightingcapacity of our nation’s navy to a modern level," the defence ministrysaid in a statement.

国防部长在讲话中称，“拥有这艘航母，对提升海军整体战斗力有重大意义，让我们的海军提升到了现代化水平。”

The Liaoning, formerlyknown as the Varyag, was constructed in the 1980s for the Soviet navy but wasnever completed.

“辽宁号”前身是“瓦良格”，由前苏联海军于1980年代建造，但未曾完工。

When the Soviet Unioncollapsed in 1991, the Varyag sat in Ukraine’s dockyards.

1991年苏联解体后，“瓦良格”号被废弃在乌克兰。

A Chinese company with links to China’s People’s Liberation Army(PLA) bought the ship just as Soviet warships were being cut for scrap. It saidit wanted to turn the Varyag into a floating casino in Macau and in 2001 theship was towed to China.

中国一家公司之后把将要作为废物处理的“瓦良格”号收购，并打算将其打造成澳门的海上游乐场，“瓦良格”号最终于2001年抵达中国。

The Chinese militaryconfirmed in June 2011 that it was being refitted to serve as the nation’sfirst aircraft carrier.

中国军方于2011年六月证实将要把这艘舰船改造为中国第一艘航母。

Analysts say it will take years to outfit the carrier withaircraft and make it fully operational. But Chinese officials say that theLiaoning advances the country’s military modernisation.

分析家认为， 要全面装备并运作这艘航母还需多年时间。但中国官方表示，“辽宁号”促进了中国的军事现代化。

"The development of aircraft carriers is an important partof China’s national defence modernisation, in particular its naval forces, andthis aircraft carrier is an essential stepping stone toward its own moreadvanced aircraft carriers in the future," China’s Rear Admiral Yang Yiwrote in the state-run China Daily newspaper.

“研发航空母舰是中国国防现代化的重要组成部分，尤其对海军实力而言，这艘航母是今后中国制造自己更先进的航母的基石。”中国海军少将杨毅在《中国日报》发表的文章中写道。

The carrier will be mostly used "for scientific researchand training missions" so China could build "a more advanced aircraftcarrier platform in the future", he added.

杨毅补充道“这艘航母将主要用于科研和训练，日后，中国将建造更先进的航母平台。”
