Polls have closed in Venezuela after millions cast their votes for successors to the late Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez. The electoral authorities say the poll went smoothly. Voters reach in between the acting president Nicolas Maduro and the opposition candidate Henrique Capriles. Minutes before the polls closed, computer hackers took control of the Twitter account of Mr. Maduro. Two of his campaign websites were also targeted. 

Researchers in the United States have succeeded in making a working kidney and transplanting it into rats. The scientists say this bio-engineering process could potentially make organ donations unnecessary in future.

The Anne Frank museum in Netherlands has defended the pop star Justin Bieber after he wrote in his Visitor’s Book that he had the young diarist in the holocaust victims would be a fan of his. The spokeswoman for the museum said the star hadn’t meant to cause offense. 

Justin Trudeau, the son of the late Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, has been elected leader of the country’s once dominant Liberal Party. Addressing cheering supporters in Ottawa, he said he accepted the role with humility and pride. In the last general election two years ago, the Liberal Party slipped to the 3rd place.

At least 10 people have been killed in militant attacks in Iraq. They include the candidates in provincial elections due to take place next Saturday. 

The Cypriot president has announced new measures to try to mitigate the damage suffered by foreign investors from the country’s deep financial crisis. He said any non-resident investor who lost at least 3 million euros will be eligible to apply for Cypriot citizenship. 

Hundreds of dead and dying sea birds have been washed up along the south west coast of England. It more appeared to be a repeat of a similar pollution incident two months ago. The birds are covered in sticky glue-like substance.
