Syrian activists say at least 6,000 people have died in Syria last month more than at any other time since the uprising began. The Syrian observatory for human right estimated 600 of those who died were children and women. According to United Nations’ figures more 70,000 people have been killed in Syria since 2011. 

French and Malian forces once again pushing back Islamist rebels after they re-entered the northern city of Timbuktu at the weekend. French pilot troops have also been brought in to secure the airport.  

Prosecutors in the U.S. state of Colorado say they will seek the death penalty for the man accused of shooting dead 12 people at a cinema last July. James Holmes is expected to plead not guilty with his lawyer arguing that he was insane at that time.
